7-Day Honeymoon Itinerary for Tonga

A week’s honeymoon in Tonga can mean a diverse experience seeing different islands, contrasting in their beauty, accommodations and experiences. In this Tonga honeymoon itinerary for 7 days, we guide you through the romantic activities, the gorgeous places to stay and the unforgettable experiences for the couple who wants to start the rest of their lives together with the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure.

While this itinerary is pretty active and involves a lot of island-hopping, we do offer an alternative honeymoon experience in How to Spend 7 Days on a Honeymoon in Tonga TI061.

How to Get Around Tonga in 7 Days

The beauty of a South Seas honeymoon is exploring on land and across the ocean. While we give you some transport tips within the itinerary, here’s a quick overview of how to get around Tonga on your honeymoon.

Road Transport in Tonga

Tongatapu is well-connected with roads. Car rentals, taxis, buses, airport transfers and guided tours are all available. However, Ha’apai and ‘Eua are less developed where you’ll need to rely on your accommodation provider to get around.

Overwater Transport in Tonga

For a special occasion, we recommend treating yourself to flights between the island groups for a smoother and more scenic transition, compared to taking the ferries. If you’re staying on an island resort, boat transfers will be arranged through the resort.

Learn more about transport in each of the destinations mentioned in the following guides:

Day 1 – Tongatapu to ‘Eua

Travel time: 5-minute taxi, 10-minute flight

With just one week in Tonga, you have no time to waste transitioning into honeymoon mode! After landing at Fua’amotu International Aiport, take a taxi to the domestic terminal where you’ll catch a 10-minute scenic flight to one of Tonga’s most stunning natural paradises, the island of ‘Eua!

‘Eua is Tonga’s oldest island, providing an attractive and tranquil setting for a honeymoon with dense tropical forests of the ‘Eua National Park and rugged coastline with all sorts of weird and wonderful land formations. We’ll get more into that tomorrow, but for now, your accommodation provider will pick you up from the airport (there is no public transport on ‘Eua) and transport you to their special place in the world.

Stay at the Ovava Tree Lodge, the most romantic choice on the island for couples with its timber-lined cabins elevated in lush forest. Learn more about the accommodation, as well as see more options, in the 6 Best Resorts in ‘Eua.

Day 2 – ‘Eua

‘Eua is an ideal destination to start your honeymoon, while you are feeling fresh to take on one of the exciting and active experiences the island has to offer.

Connect with nature (and each other) by doing one of the breathtaking hikes in and around the ‘Eua National Park where exploring limestone caves, seeing huge banyan trees and looking for parrots is all part of the experience. There are also some exciting opportunities to scuba dive in the South Pacific’s largest sea cave or even swim with majestic humpback whales between June and as late as November.

Romantic Activities in ‘Eua

  • Tackle one of ‘Eua’s stunning hikes together
  • Share a once-in-a-lifetime experience swimming with whales
  • Enjoy long walks along ‘Eua’s secluded beaches
  • Buddy up on a scuba diving trip to Cathedral Cave
  • Go horse riding through the island together
  • Be a couple of love birds doing some bird watching for the red shining parrot

Day 3 – ‘Eua to Ha’apai

Travel time: 10-minute flight to Tongatapu, 50-minute flight to Ha’apai

Swap the rugged beauty of ‘Eua for idyllic islands with white sands, crystal clear waters and swaying palms in the island group of Ha’apai! Today, your accommodation provider in ‘Eua will transport you to the airport where you’ll then fly back to Tongatapu. From there, catch another flight over glorious scattered islands to Ha’apai.

Ha’apai is often described as a real hidden gem of the South Pacific, providing 62 small islands decorating the ocean yet relatively undeveloped. 45 of the islands are uninhabited and most getaways to Ha’apai centre around the islands of Lifuka, Uolevu and Foa.

Your chosen resort will pick you up from the wharf and take you to your next romantic stay. It could be an eco-haven nestled in beachfront vegetation or even a private island all to yourselves!

Day 4 – Ha’apai

This is paradise: sandy shores lined with palms and leading onto azure lagoons. It’s what most couples picture for an island honeymoon.

If you feel like relaxing, resorts offer yoga classes, sunset paddleboarding tours and have plenty of hammocks on the beach. Otherwise, the more active couple can experience scuba diving over unspoiled reefs, explore the islands by bicycle or horseback, or, once again, swim with beautiful whales in the right season.

Romantic Activities in Ha’apai

  • Experience an unforgettable whale-swimming tour
  • Be treated to a private island experience for the day

  • Explore the islands on horseback
  • Be each other’s “buddy” in a scuba diving trip
  • Test your relationship by working together in a double kayak

Day 5 – Ha’apai

Chance are, you didn’t do everything on the list from yesterday. Why not have a private island experience, where resorts like the Sea Change Eco Retreat take you to an uninhabited island for an island picnic, snorkelling lazying under the shades of a palm tree?

Day 6 – Ha’apai to Nuku’alofa

Travel time: 50-minutes flight, 30-minutes transfer

Although it’s going to feel impossible to leave the stunning islands of Ha’apai, we recommend leaving the day before your flight out of Tonga. Not only will this give you contingency time, in case the flight out of Ha’apai is cancelled (which is not unusual), but it also gives you time to experience Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa, which is your next destination.

Hit the skies once again with glorious views of the island archipelago before landing back in Tongatapu. Your accommodation in Nuku’alofa will likely be able to organise transfers. Otherwise, take a taxi to Nuku’alofa where you’ll be able to wine and dine for your last evening in Tonga. If you have more time in Nuku’alofa, see if you can do one of the 6 Romantic Activities in Nuku’alofa for Couples.

Perhaps you have time this morning to do one of the 6 Romantic Activities in Nuku’alofa for Couples if you are taking one of the evening flights out of Tonga. Otherwise, treat yourself to an indulgent breakfast at the Friends Cafe, Cafe Escape or Coffee Post and pick up some unique souvenirs from the Langofonua Handicrafts Centre or Talamahu Market before getting a taxi to Fua’amotu International Aiport.

Take a flight to your final destination and the rest of your lives together.
