Tongatapu and Outer Island Tours from Nuku’alofa

Explore the island of Tongatapu or discover its idyllic off-shore islands with one of the island day trips and tours from Nuku’alofa. A six-hour excursion can take you to see all of the main hotspots around Tongatapu or you can jump on a boat from Faua Wharf to one of the nearby islands to spend the day however you like. The great thing is that most of these tours operate on a Sunday when the rest of the country closes down – see more of the 10 Things to Do in Tonga on a Sunday. So, see the sights and explore the gorgeous islands around Tongatapu by taking one of these island tours from Nuku’alofa.

1. Pangaimotu Island Day Trip

Catch the Pangaimotu Island boat from Faua Wharf for a day of sand, sea and (hopefully) sun! Also known as King’s Island, Pangaimotu Island is your quintessential tropical island where you can spend the day snorkelling at the reef, walking on the beach, and finding yourself a shady spot to relax under a coconut tree (watch your head)! Snorkelling gear is available to rent for a small fee. Bring your own lunch, water and any other supplies you may need. Boat transfers only operate when there are at least 10 people booked, so it’s best to book ahead for weekday visits. On Sundays, the boat departs from Faua Wharf at 11 am and 12 pm and returns at 4 pm and 5/6 pm.

Location: Boats depart from Faua Wharf, just behind the Ngutulei Restaurant and the fish market, Vuna Road (opposite Davina House), Ma’ufanga, Nuku’alofa.

After a 15-20-minute boat trip from Deep Blue Diving‘s base at Faua Wharf, you’ll reach ‘Atata Island’s protected waters with some of the best snorkelling in Tongatapu. Snorkelling tours include all the gear that you’ll need for snorkelling, including snorkel, masks, fins and a wetsuit, as well as snacks and a homemade cooked lunch in reusable containers (a rarity in Tonga). Note that this tour is not available during the whale season. Learn more about the tour in The Best Snorkel & Scuba Dive Tours in Tongatapu & Nuku’alofa.

Location: Trips depart from their colourful dive shop at Faua Wharf, Vuna Road, Ma’ufanga, Nuku’alofa.
