Destinations Visited in Our Tonga Itineraries for 7 Days
Tonga is made up of 169 islands, so let us break down the destinations that you will visit in these 1-week Tonga itineraries.
Tongatapu
Tongatapu is Tonga’s “main island” and arrival island of most travellers where you’ll find the Fua’amotu International Airport. Not only is Tongatapu home to some of Tonga’s most famous historical sites and natural attractions, but it’s also home to the nation’s capital, Nuku’alofa. Find out more about the capital and the surrounding island in The Complete Guide to Tongatapu and The Complete Guide to Nuku’alofa.
‘Eua
‘Eua is Tonga’s oldest island at around 40 million years old and sits 45km (28 miles) southeast of Tongatapu. The island is one of Tonga’s more “rugged” and less-developed islands with an array of weathered land formations and lush native forest protected in the ‘Eua National Park. Find out more about ‘Eua in The Complete Guide to ‘Eua.
Ha’apai
Ha’apai is the central island group of Tonga, made up of 62 islands. With only 17 of the islands with inhabitants, the island group is much less developed apart from a few villages, one main town and a small selection of eco-resorts. Ha’apai is where you’ll find white sand beaches leading into tranquil lagoons and islands of swaying palm trees. Learn more in The Complete Guide to Ha’apai.
Vava’u
Vava’u is the second-northernmost island group of Tonga and one of the more developed islands with Tonga’s second-largest town, Neiafu. Vava’u consists of around 50 islands with a larger main island connected to smaller islands via causeways, as well as other islands compactly scattered across the archipelago. Learn more about Vava’u in The Complete Guide to Vava’u.
Tonga’s other island group is The Niuas, three islands far-flung in the northern reaches of the nation. Due to infrequent flights and ferries, getting to this island group within one week is just not doable.
