14-Day Honeymoon Itinerary for Tonga
Want to find a honeymoon destination as unique as the couple you are? Tonga has to be on the shortlist! The South Pacific Islands provide that dreamy island getaway for a honeymoon offering much more tranquillity and authenticity than some of the other South Pacific nations. Swap large bustling resorts for boutique stays, where resorts are just a few quaint fales (bungalows) on the beach. Sure, Tonga isn’t for every couple, but for the couple that would rather reconnect with nature and each other, you sure can’t go wrong. We’ll guide you through the 14 glorious days of romantic activities, island-hopping and beautiful stays in this Tonga honeymoon itinerary for 14 days.
This itinerary is for the couple who want to enjoy an active adventure around Tonga. For a more relaxing itinerary, take a look at How to Spend 14 Days on a Honeymoon in Tonga TI060.
How to Get Around Tonga in 14 Days
For a real South Pacific Island adventure, we have you exploring four of the five main island groups of Tonga. While we give you some transport tips within the itinerary, here’s a quick overview of how to get around Tonga on your honeymoon.
Road Transport in Tonga
Tongatapu and Vava’u are well-connected with roads, with car rentals, taxis, buses, airport transfers and guided tours available. Ha’apai and ‘Eua are less developed with few roads and not many options for transport. For these islands, you’ll need to rely on your accommodation provider to get around.
Overwater Transport in Tonga
For a special occasion, we recommend taking flights between the island groups for a smoother and more scenic transition. However, we do suggest you take a ferry between Vava’u and Ha’apai, as flight schedules are infrequent between these two destinations. If you’re staying on an island resort, boat transfers will be arranged through the resort.
Learn more about transport in each of the destinations mentioned in the following guides:

Day 1 – Tongatapu
Travel time: 30-50 minutes airport transfer
Your honeymoon begins in Tongatapu! For your couple of nights, we recommend indulging in one of the beachfront or island resorts to put yourselves in an idyllic setting to set the right tone for your honeymoon. For a scenic and intimate experience, we recommend taking the 7-10-minute flight from Fua’amotu Airport’s domestic terminal to ‘Eua. In ‘Eua, you should be able to arrange for your accommodation to pick you up, as there is no public transport on the island.
‘Eua only have six accommodation choices on the whole island, with the most romantic for couples being the Ovava Tree Lodge. Stay in a timber-lined cabin elevated in lush forest with boardwalks leading to the dining area. See your other choices in the 6 Best Resorts in ‘Eua.

Day 4 – ‘Eua
‘Eua is all about embracing nature, making it the ideal place to disconnect from the world and connect with each other. For the active couple, do one of the breathtaking hikes in and around the ‘Eua National Park where exploring limestone caves, seeing huge banyan trees and looking for parrots is all part of the experience. There are also some exciting opportunities to scuba dive in the South Pacific’s largest sea cave or, again, with majestic humpback whales.

This might involve just transport over land or over water with an adventurous boat ride to a remote island. The first hour of the journey is a scenic sail through the islands, then you’ll be sailing across the open water where you’ll be able to bond over a card game or discuss life’s mysteries before docking up at Lifuka Island.
Ha’apai is much less developed than Tongatapu and Vava’u, making it feel like a real hidden gem of the South Pacific. It also means that you will need to rely on your chosen resort to pick you up from the wharf and take you to your next romantic stay in the islands. It could be an eco-haven on the beach or even a private island all to yourselves.

Or how about simply exploring the shored and gliding over crystal clear waters in a double kayak?

Day 13 – Ha’apai to Nuku’alofa
Travel time: 50-minutes flight
Although it’s going to feel impossible to leave the stunning islands of Ha’apai, we recommend leaving the day before your flight out of Tonga, as domestic flight schedules often change in Tonga due to less-than-ideal weather conditions. Nevertheless, you’ll hit the skies once again with glorious views of the island archipelago before landing back in Tongatapu. We recommend staying in Nuku’alofa again for just a one-night stay, where you’ll be able to share one last romantic dinner on your honeymoon.
