How to Get Around Tonga in One Week

Ah, the joys of the South Pacific! The itinerary below has you visiting three of Tonga’s major island groups. With that, you’ll need to do some travelling over land and water. While we give some tips in the itinerary, here is an overview of how to get around Tonga in one week.

Road Transport in Tonga

Upon arrival to both Tongatapu and Vava’u, accommodations typically offer airport transfers or car rental companies can deliver vehicles to the airport. The mainland islands also have taxis. Check out How to Get an Airport Transfer in Tonga for more on the subject.

For travelling on each of the islands, car hire offers the most flexibility, convenience and privacy. Get advice on car hire from What You Need to Hire a Car in Tonga. Alternatively, this itinerary is doable with a mix of taxis (see The Complete Guide to Taxis in Tonga), hiring private drivers (see How to Hire a Driver in Tonga for more advice), as well as taking guided tours such as the 10 Best Sightseeing Tours in Tonga.

Overwater Transport in Tonga

In this itinerary, we mostly recommend taking domestic flights between the island groups, which is the fastest and most convenient for most travellers – see Domestic Flights in Tonga: A Guide to Interisland Flights. Note that no flights operate on a Sunday and are prone to cancellations due to bad weather; that’s why this itinerary allows for extra days at each destination, as well as leaves a day between domestic and international flights.

For getting to island resorts, resorts offer their own boat transfers, which need to be arranged before arrival. Otherwise, check out A Guide to Boat Transfers & Water Taxis in Tonga for alternatives.

Day 2 – Explore Tongatapu

Travel time: 1-3 hours drive for sightseeing (see The Driving Times & Distances in Tonga).

Take today to explore some of the amazing land attractions on Tongatapu. How about playing at Tonga’s only golf course or sunbathing at Ha’atafu Beach?

If you’re feeling active, we recommend taking a tour of Tongatapu to see some of its natural and historic wonders. See the intriguing Ha’amonga ‘a Maui Trilithon, otherwise known as the Stonehenge of the South Pacific. Go for a dip in the ‘Anahulu Cave or see the wonderous Mapua ‘a Vaea Blowholes! There are plenty of tour options available, including a private tour of Tongatapu with Tonga Travel Troupe.

Day Tour of Tongatapu

Explore sights, such as the Ha’amonga ‘a Maui Trilithon, Mapua ‘a Vaea Blowholes, Tsunami Rock, Anahulu Cave and much more by either taking a self-guided driving tour of Tongatapu (see A Self-Guided Day Trip of Tongatapu) or one of the 5 Best Guided Island Land Tours of Tongatapu.

If out sightseeing, lunch stops along the road include the Garden Cafe (Vaini) and Siva’s Dream Cafe (Te’ekiu). Otherwise, check out cafes in town listed in the 10 Best Cafes in Nuku’alofa & Tongatapu.

Day 3 – Tongatapu to Vava’u

Travel time: 15-20 mins airport transfer + 1 hr flight + 20 mins – 1 hr Vava’u airport transfer (see Tonga Travel Times & Distances).

Arrange with your accommodation provider to transfer you to Fua’amotu Airport’s domestic terminal where you’ll enjoy a scenic 1-hour flight over the scattered islands of Tonga on your way to Vava’u. Vava’u is a watersports paradise, where sailing and fishing are the main highlights here, as well as, of course, whale swimming!

For a luxury stay in Vava’u, you could choose a luxury apartment near the main town, Neiafu, or opt for a stay in a stunning island resort. Either way, you can arrange with your accommodation provider to pick you up from the airport and provide the road and overwater transport necessary.

Note that Vava’u is definitely a destination of “rugged luxury” where boat transfers might be basic (you might get wet) and accommodation isn’t exactly five stars. Nevertheless, there are some superb three-star and four-star resorts in five-star landscapes…

Luxury Accommodation in Vava’u

  • The Reef Resort
  • Mandala Resort
  • Wolfgramm Beachfront
  • Treasure Island Eco Resort
  • Lupetea Apartment

Learn more about each accommodation in the 5 Best Luxury Accommodations in Vava’u.

Dining Recommendations

Those staying at an island resort will be treated to the fare of its dining fale, while those sticking to the mainland will find upscale dining at the Tongan Beach Resort (‘Utungake) which is open to the public. Closer to the town of Neiafu, Bellavista Cafe & Restaurant (Guttenbeil Plaza) boasts sumptuous Italian cuisine with unbeatable harbour views. See the 15 Best Cafes & Restaurants in Vava’u to learn more.

Days 4 & 5 – Explore Vava’u

Vava’u is a destination for getting out on the water. The waters are renowned for providing excellent conditions for sailing, kitesurfing, scuba diving at exciting dive sites, snorkelling in vast sea caves and fishing for highly-sought game fish like giant trevally and blue marlin. Of course, there’s also the option to indulge in a massage or rejuvenate in a yoga session. Trying some of the freshest South Pacific cuisines is also always a treat.

Luxury Activities in Vava’u

Dining Recommendations

Throughout your stay, your chosen resort will look after your appetite. Otherwise, those visiting Neiafu can take advantage of its dining scene with the likes of The Harbourview (Toula) serving European-inspired cuisine with views to justify the name. We also highly recommend the rustic Basque Tavern (Fatafehi Road) for its tapas dining. For anything we’ve missed, you’ll likely find it in The Food Guide to Vava’u: Places to Eat & Food Tours.

Day 6 – Vava’u to Nuku’alofa

Travel time: 20 mins – 1 hr airport transfer + 1 hr flight + 30 mins Nuku’alofa airport transfer.

It’s time to leave the islands of Vava’u behind, which we recommend arranging the day before your flight out of Tonga to leave you enough time to reschedule flights in case they are cancelled (which happens frequently in Vava’u).

Arrange with your resort to transport you back to Lupepauʻu Airport where you’ll catch your flight over the scattering of islands decorating the ocean! You’ll land at Fua’amotu Airport where you can arrange for your accommodation to transfer you to your four-star hotel or boutique lodge in Nuku’alofa.

Spend your last evening dining in one of the city’s elegant restaurants and toast to one week well spent in Tonga.

Luxury Accommodation in Nuku’alofa

Find out more about each accommodation in our 5 Best Luxury Accommodations in Nuku’alofa.

Dining Recommendations

Although Nuku’alofa has the largest range of eateries in The Kingdom, The Top Restaurant (Taufa’ahau Road) and Chef Zero (Popua) rarely fail to impress. For more dining recommendations, head to The Food Guide to Tongatapu.

Day 7 – Explore Nuku’alofa + Departure

Travel time: 30 mins.

It’s your last chance to pick up some spectacular souvenirs from the Langafonua Handicrafts Centre or the Talamahu Market. Perhaps have a coffee at the Friends Cafe and snap up a photo of the Royal Palace before heading to Fua’amotu International Airport one last time.

Day Tour of Nuku’alofa

Potter around the capital soaking in the sights of grand churches, the Royal Tombs, the Royal Palace and more. Check out A Self-Guided Day Tour of Nuku’alofa. We even have a cycling itinerary in The Best Cycling Routes in Nuku’alofa & Tongatapu.

Luxury Activities in Nuku’alofa

Learn more about each activity in our 10 Best Luxury Experiences in Nuku’alofa.

Departure

Your accommodation should be able to transfer you to Fua’amotu Airport from Nuku’alofa. Otherwise, book a taxi from the information centre or the taxi ranks in town.

Remember to arrive at the airport a couple of hours before your scheduled departure so that you have enough time to check in, go through security and browse the small selection of retail offerings. For anything else you need to know about leaving Tonga, it’s all listed in our guide, Leaving Tonga: Departure Tips & Checklist.

And it’s “Nofo ā” (goodbye) to Tonga!
