If you have the luxury of visiting the adventure hub of Tonga but don’t have the luxury of time, this is the itinerary for you! Stay in four-star island resorts or the capital city’s premium apartments and hotels during your time where you’ll have the opportunity to see natural attractions and historical sites on a private tour or perhaps swim with majestic humpback whales during the right season. We’ll guide you through how to make a long weekend in Tonga extra special with this Tonga luxury itinerary for 3 days.

How to Get Around Tonga in 3 Days

With only three days in Tonga, you won’t have time to island-hop to various island groups. The only overwater travel you may experience is a boat transfer to an island resort, which will be organised through your resort.

Instead, you’ll be travelling overland in Tongatapu, which is well-connected with roads. In this luxury itinerary, we recommend using accommodation/airport transfers arranged through your accommodation, as well as private guided tours to take you around the sights. However, car rental, taxis and public buses are available, which you can read up more on in the 10 Ways to Get to Tongatapu (& Around Tongatapu).

Day 1 – Land in Tongatapu

Travel time: 30-50 minutes depending on where you stay

Welcome to Tonga and the Kingdom’s main island, Tongatapu! After landing at Fua’amotu Airport, you’ll be whisked away with an accommodation transfer to either an attractive beachfront resort or a luxury apartment in the nation’s capital, Nuku’alofa. See the accommodation recommendations below to help you choose the right fit for you!

With only three days in Tonga, don’t waste any time seeing the sights of Nuku’alofa, like the Royal Palace or browsing the unique arts and crafts of the Langafonua Handicrafts Centre. Alternatively, if you’re staying at a resort, then enjoy some downtime on the beach, make use of the complimentary kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear and enjoy a few sundowners at the bar.
