Ha’apai Guesthouses: Stay with the Locals!

Travellers on a budget can breathe easy knowing that despite the Ha’apai islands looking like a five-star destination, there are, in fact, very affordable guesthouses. All of the guesthouses in Ha’apai are centred around the town of Pangai on Lifuka Island. Many of the guesthouses offer airport/wharf transfers, as well as bicycle hire to make getting around Lifuka Island and the connecting Foa Island easy.

While the guesthouses are basic in their facilities, they provide a more locals experience with all the guesthouses on Lifuka Island being operated by local Tongans!

Note that Tonga is an ever-changing country. With that, accommodations often change or upgrade services – typically without telling anyone about it. Although we try to keep our listings up-to-date, do feel free to reach out with any updates.

1. Lindsay Guesthouse

Starting with the largest guesthouse in Ha’apai, Lindsay Guesthouse is well worth considering. Just a 10-minute walk from Pangai town centre and located next door to the island’s bakery, it has a convenient location. Stay in one of the 12 rooms available, including single, double and triple rooms with cold-water shared bathroom facilities. Other options include a double and a triple ensuite room. Outside of the rooms, guests can relax in the communal lounge or out on the spacious verandah and lawns. Breakfast is included each day of stay, while lunch is also available to arrange but dinner is not an option. Other features of the guesthouse include bike hire, mosquito nets and fans in your room on request. See more accommodation like this in our 7 Best Budget Accommodation in Ha’apai.

2. Fifita Guesthouse

A super popular choice due to its location, Fifita Guesthouse is located on the top of the Mariner’s Cafe in Pangai. Choose from seven affordable double, twin and single rooms where guests share a bathroom with… hot showers! Those staying in the ensuite rooms will not have the same luxury, however, as the bathrooms have cold water. Nevertheless, rooms are kitted out with mosquito nets, fans (you will possibly need to ask for a fan) and breakfast is included in the price. Although dinner is available to order, most guests head to the Mariner’s Cafe for food downstairs. Alternatively, you can keep things frugal by using the communal kitchen where, incidentally, most of the socialising happens. 3. Fonongava’inga (Langi Langi) Guesthouse

You’ll be part of the family when you stay with Langi Langi at the Fonongava’inga Guesthouse. Langi Langi not only offers handicraft workshops for a small fee (see 10 Free & Cheap Things To Do in Ha’apai for details), but she also has seven well-presented rooms to stay in. There are single rooms, double rooms and two triple rooms, all with a fan and power points. Guests will need to use the communal bathrooms with cold showers, while the communal lounge is spacious and a popular hang-out. There is also a communal kitchen available to use for a small fee or you can request breakfast, lunch and/or dinner throughout your stay. The guesthouse is a five-minute walk from Pangai town centre.

4. Evaloni Guesthouse

Another budget guesthouse in Pangai is the Evaloni Guesthouse, which has six downstairs fan-cooled rooms with a shared bathroom and two large airy ensuites upstairs. All bathroom facilities have cold water. Each room has mosquito nets and power points, while the communal kitchen can be used for a fee of around TOP$10. Otherwise, breakfast and dinner can be arranged. Other services that the guesthouse provides include airport/wharf transfers, bike hire and interestingly, some of the old Ha’apai Museum artefacts. The guesthouse is just a two-minute walk from the town centre. Stays at the remote Billy’s Place, which is run by Evaloni’s brother, can also be arranged here. 5. Tiulipe Guest House

Last but certainly not least, Tiulipe Guest House provides a clean and comfortable stay right in the centre of Pangai. You’re only 300m (300 yards) away from local convenience stores and the market, should you want to make use of the kitchen for self-catering. Otherwise, the guesthouse can arrange meals made to order. Breakfast is included in the rate if you stay in one of the single, double, twin-share or family rooms available. The family rooms have a private ensuite bathroom, while the other rooms have shared bathroom facilities. Airport transfers, WiFi and bike hire can also be arranged for a fee.
