4WD Tours in Tonga
Roads are kind of overrated in Tonga. If you want to get to the less-visited areas, see the ruggedly beautiful forest and cliffs of the islands and do it in a pretty exciting way, then try one of the off-roading tours in Tonga.
Admittedly, all of the 4WD tours are on the island of ‘Eua, as the jungle-clad island’s top sights can only be accessed on gnarly dirt roads.
Let’s dive into more detail in this list of the best off-road tours in Tonga!

1. Off-grid Tonga
Run by Damon and Nooroa, a welcoming couple who’ve made ‘Eua their home, Off-grid Tonga offers authentic tours that showcase the island’s raw beauty and local culture. Their relaxed, personal approach takes you to hidden spots and wild trails that most visitors miss.
The “‘Eua South Side Tour” is a standout experience, beginning with a comfortable pick-up from your accommodation. You’ll journey to the breathtaking Lakufa’anga Cliffs at the island’s southernmost point, where you can explore the fascinating Rock Garden and impressive Lianga Huo ‘a Maui archway whilst keeping an eye out for wild horses.
Throughout the day, you’ll visit the magnificent Big Ovava Tree, Ana Ahu (the smoking cave), and the spectacular Lokupo Lookout. The tour wraps up with a refreshing dip at Hafu Pool before heading back. Timings are flexible, so you can truly savour each stop.
Location: Pick-up from your accommodation or preffered location.

Making their guests’ stay all too easy, Blue Water Retreat offers island tours of ‘Eua in their beasty and very capable 4WD vehicles, which are necessary to get to the island’s hard-to-reach sights.
Their signature tour is a half-day escapade to Lakufa’anga Cliffs, Rock Gardens and the Li’anga Huo a Maui natural archway all the way at the bottom of the island. Keep your eyes peeled for wild horses among the rock formations.
For a full-day excursion, and the most “off-road” of the two tours, you’ll venture into the ‘Eua National Park to see the likes of the Big ‘Ovava Tree which is an 800-year-old banyan tree, a sinkhole called the “Smoking Cave”, and the Lokupo Lookout and Rats Cave.

Location: Tours depart from Blue Water Retreat, Tufuvai, central west coast of ‘Eua.

Another off-roading tour of ‘Eua is with Kiko from ‘Alakoka Tahi Moana Guest House (Kiko’s). When the local family are not taking you out to swim with humpback whales during the whale season, they take you on 4WD tours of the island. There are two main tours available:
- Kiko’s ‘Eua Island Tours: Explore the Hafu Pool, Rock Gardens, Lakufaʻanga Cliff, and spot the wild horses that roam freely. Continue to the Archway, Big Ovava Tree, Smoking Cave, Lokupo Lookout and Rats Cave. Depending on the itinerary, you may also visit Fangatave Beach and Caves or Tufuvai Beach, where you can unwind and enjoy the breathtaking sunset.
- Kiko’s Fangatave Cliffs Tour: Enjoy a guided adventure to Fangatave Cliffs, scrambling past limestone caves and lookout points including Matamahina Lookout, before relaxing at the secluded Fangatave Beach to swim, snorkel, or unwind, then completing the scenic climb back up.
Location: Tours depart from ‘Alakoka Tahi Guest House, Angaha, central villages of ‘Eua.

Offering informal island tours, several accommodations either have their own 4WD tour or can organise one with an eager local. Many of these are much more informal than the previous tours mentioned, providing a quintessential Tonga tourism experience. With that, they are also usually a bit cheaper.
Bring your own refreshments and cash to pay your driver/guide, even if they haven’t stated a price; you’ll at least want to pay your way for fuel.
